Lake Living Minnetonka

Set on lakefront property, this shingle-style gambrel-roofed house bends to mimic the bowed shoreline, weaving around existing maple trees. All the rooms are open to sweeping lawn and lake views, reflecting a gracious Gatsby-type lifestyle. The owners’ wish to experience a feeling of the history of the area led to design clues taken from turn-of-the-century Minnetonka homes and hotels; exterior shingles were bleached to mimic aging. The continuous horizontal volume of the house roof is interrupted by reverse gables, shed dormers, eyebrow windows and light-admitting monitors that provide complex massing along the horizontal axes. A covered pergola accommodates outdoor dining.
